Celebrating LGBTQ+ Scientists

Pii Prides

Throughout the year, Pii has proudly recognized the contributions and influences of many nationalities, ethnic identities, and races. During Pride Month, we researched LGBTQ+ scientists who have laid a unique imprint on modern society. We wanted to share stories and successes of self-identified or strongly implied members of the LGBTQ+ Community throughout history.

Francis Bacon

Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

Sir Francis Bacon is considered to be the founder of the scientific method. Throughout his life, Sir Francis Bacon challenged everyone to look at events in nature and to limit scientific knowledge to be based only upon inductive reasoning. Additionally, he was the Lord High Chancellor of England between 1617 and 1621. Without his influence, the scientific community would not be where it is today.

Florence Nightingale (1820–1910)

To help train nurses with the same compassion, she opened the first nurses’ training programme, the Nightingale School for Nurses.
